Electronic IDs (eIDs) used to be optional — a nice-to-have for the more tech-forward users, a pilot program here and there. That’s changing fast. Governments are issuing digital ID cards and wallets at scale, and regulators are beginning to require businesses to accept them.
Mobile driver’s licenses, government-issued eIDs, civic identity apps, digital wallet credentials…the format varies by country, but the direction doesn’t. Juniper Research found that 4.8 billion people are forecast to have digital identity cards in 2026, with nearly half of those held in a civic identity app. Overall, digital wallets are on track to reach 5 billion users worldwide in the same year.
Regulators across the EU, U.S., and beyond are moving in lockstep, and the businesses that serve their citizens need to keep up.
Europe is furthest along, and its deadline is here. eIDAS 2.0 is already in force, requiring every EU member state to offer a compliant EUDI Wallet by the end of 2026, and large platforms in regulated sectors to accept it as an authentication method by late 2027. Meanwhile, Brazil, more than 30 U.S. states, and eID programs across Africa, the Middle East, South America, Australia, and New Zealand are all racing toward mainstream adoption on their own timelines. Chasing accreditation in each of those markets one by one isn’t a side project for companies that want or need to accept eIDs and digital wallets globally. It can take months of work per jurisdiction to obtain the required accreditation.
So how do you get ahead of it without rebuilding your verification stack country by country? This infographic breaks down the mandates on the horizon, how fast eIDs and digital wallets are going mainstream, and how Jumio’s pre-built connectivity across 60+ countries lets you accept every eID, mDL, and digital wallet credential without doing the accreditation work yourself.
