Our digital and physical worlds are becoming increasingly inseparable, with 81% of American adults going online on a daily basis, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. Consumers can do everything from renting a vacation home to opening a new bank account with just a few clicks and swipes. In the process they’re leaving a digital trail of information that can be used against them if that data falls into the wrong hands.
The California Consumer Privacy Act, or CCPA, is expected to be the strictest data privacy law in the U.S. when it goes into effect January 1, 2020. The CCPA grants California residents an array of new rights, starting with the right to be informed about what kinds of personal data companies have collected and why it was collected. Among other novel protections, the CCPA stipulates that consumers have the right to request the deletion of personal information, opt out of the sale of personal information and access the personal information in a “readily useable format” that enables its transfer to third parties without hindrance.
