National Jumio Survey Uncovers Challenges at Checkout –
Lost Revenue for Brands

PALO ALTO, Calif. – May 9, 2013 – Results from the 2013 Mobile Consumer Insights study released today by Jumio, Inc. and conducted online by Harris Interactive® identify why shopping cart abandonment continues to be a major issue among consumers. While the majority of smartphone and tablet owners (68%) have attempted to make a purchase on their device, two-thirds (66%) failed to complete a transaction due to obstacles encountered during checkout. Though consumers favor the convenience of shopping on-the-go, a number of barriers – from not being comfortable or feeling secure entering their credit card information to the checkout process being too difficult on their device – were cited as top reasons why respondents failed to complete a purchase on their smartphone or tablet.

This study was conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of Jumio, Inc. from March 22–26, 2013, among 2,130 U.S. online adults ages 18+.

Detailed findings from the Mobile Consumer Insights report include:

Cleanup at Checkout

Almost seven in 10 smartphone and tablet owners (68%) have attempted to make purchases on their device. However, problems during the payment process have forced two-thirds (66%) of that group to abandon their transactions. Nearly half (47%) said they failed to complete a purchase because the checkout process took too long.

Among those adults who failed to complete an attempted purchase on their smartphone or tablet…

41% said the checkout was too difficult on their device

23% said they failed to complete their purchase because it would not go through

Merchandising to Men
Women may be known for holding the purse strings, but when it comes to making a purchase on mobile devices, men are the most likely to pull out the credit card.

74% of men who are smartphone/tablet owners have attempted to make a mobile purchase, compared to only 62% of women

Younger men most often shop on their mobile device, with 86% of 18–34 year old men reporting they’ve tried to purchase something on their smartphone or tablet

Safety First
The majority of those respondents who failed to complete an attempted purchase on their smartphone/tablet said it was because they didn’t feel comfortable entering their credit card information (51%). Retailers may be missing the mark when it comes to communicating with customers about online security, and costing themselves heavily because of it.

Women are more likely than men (56% vs. 47%) to say they didn’t feel secure entering their credit card information

Age also plays a factor; 62% of those 55 or older have concerns over the security of their credit card information, as compared with 59% of those 45–54 and 45% of 18–34 year olds

“Consumers will continue to demand a simpler, more streamlined mobile payment process,” continued Mattes. “Until retailers address their important concerns – from providing faster checkout options to addressing the safety of credit card and account info – they’ll continue to see a large portion of their customers abandon their shopping carts instead of clicking ‘buy’.”

Survey Methodology

This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Jumio from March 22-March 26, 2013 among 2,130 adults ages 18 and older (of whom 1,261 are smartphone/tablet owners). This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. For complete survey methodology, including weighting variables, please contact Jenny Davis.

Today, we released the second half of data from a study conducted by research leader, Harris Interactive, that looks at consumer behavior on mobile. This set of data looks specifically at the issue of mobile shopping cart abandonment, and there were some interesting insights uncovered.

The research found that while consumers are clearly interested in making purchases with their smartphones (68% have attempted a purchase in the past), they are encountering roadblocks during check out, with two-thirds (66%) failing to complete a transaction because of obstacles at the point of purchase. The biggest issues?

47% of respondents failed to complete a mobile purchase because checkout took too long

41% reported that it was too difficult to enter credit card information quickly or easily

One in four respondents said they failed to complete their purchase because it would not go through on mobile

In addition, there are differences along gender and age lines around consumers’ comfort level entering secure credit card information on mobile devices.

Our take? We know that consumers will continue to demand an easy, streamlined mobile payment process, and that frustrations around mobile transactions are causing consumers to bail at check out. Brands can’t afford to invest so much only to lose users at the finish line but until they address concerns around the safety of credit card information and the speed of the checkout process, they’ll continue to see a large portion of their customers abandoning their shopping carts.

“Airbnb and Jumio are great examples of companies who have applied new technologies and business processes to disrupt the old way of doing things in their respective spaces; lodging and authentication,” said Scott Weiss, partner, Andreessen Horowitz and Jumio board member. “It’s always exciting when two Andreessen Horowitz portfolio companies partner up to leverage each other’s innovations.”

Jumio’s Netverify enables businesses with online and mobile distribution to meet KYC and ID verification requirements through real-time scanning, and validation of government-issued IDs from over 60 countries. Netverify also scans a range of other documents such as bank statements and utility bills used for address verification or other purposes.

“As collaborative consumption services like Airbnb continue to rapidly grow in popularity, it’s important that the marketplace owners create environments of transparency, community and trust,” said Daniel Mattes, CEO, Jumio. “With Verified Identification, Airbnb now gives a guest or host even more information about who they’re interacting with, built on a product that is fast and easy to use for both parties.”

Netverify is available for web sites and on iPhone and Android, enabling mobile applications to add ID and document scanning to their customer experiences.

Palo Alto, Calif. – April 25, 2013 – Jumio, Inc., the fast growing online and mobile identity verification and payment company, today announced that TransFast.com, a leading global money transfer company, has selected and integrated Jumio’s Netverify to enable more convenient and reliable ID verification for customers executing money transfers at TransFast.com. By integrating Jumio’s ID and document scanning and verification technology into its current customer authentication process, TransFast.com significantly increases protection against fraudulent electronic fund transfers on its platform. The integration also provides TransFast.com customers with a faster, more convenient way to verify their identities prior to executing a transfer.

“We have seen exponential growth of customers leveraging online services to execute transfers in recent years and, with that growth, comes greater risk of fraud. With Jumio, we can reduce the risk of fraudulent activity in an environment that’s simple and hassle free for users—it offers the best of both worlds,” said Roshan Polepalli, director of marketing at TransFast.com. “Jumio’s real time scanning technology enables us to more efficiently identify and authenticate customers in in real time, rather than hours or even days, saving us time and money and helping our customers get their transfers through when they need to.”

In addition to customer verification via scanned ID cards, drivers licenses and passports from over 60 countries, TransFast.com is leveraging additional Jumio authentication capabilities — such as scanning bank statements and utility bills — to provide further protection for transfers deemed higher risk. This provides additional security to TransFast.com, without requiring multiple laborious steps from customers, such as faxing documentation or responding to lengthy security questions.
